HIV Awareness
Educating communities and adolescents about the deadly HIV/AIDS.
Strengthening the support to weaken the spread of AIDS
HIV continues to be a major global public health issue, having claimed 40.1 million lives so far. In 2021, 650000 people died from HIV-related causes and 1.5 million people were affected by HIV. India has the third-largest HIV epidemic in the world and it is one of the biggest challenges faced by the country. Understanding HIV and AIDS can help to be more supportive of people who have it and reduce the chances of becoming infected. HIV is an abbreviation for human immunodeficiency virus and AIDS is an abbreviation for acquired immunodeficiency syndrome and is the last stage of HIV infection. HIV virus destroys and impairs the function of immune cells, infected individuals gradually become immunodeficient. Transmission of HIV occurs through contact with certain body fluids of someone infected with HIV.
There is no cure for HIV infection. However, with increasing access to effective HIV prevention, diagnosis, treatment and care, including for opportunistic infections, HIV infection has become a manageable chronic health condition, enabling people living with HIV to lead long and healthy lives.
HIV/AIDS and human rights are closely linked together. There are several benefits to taking a human rights approach including, reducing the vulnerability to HIV infection by providing proper means of prevention to vulnerable groups, reducing the impact of the disease on those infected by ensuring proper treatment to combat the disease, increasing the communities ability to better respond to the pandemic by raising awareness and so on. This makes protecting, promoting and fulfilling people’s human rights essential to enable an effective response to the disease.
